🔥 Kiln Dried vs Seasoned logs: What’s the Difference? Softwood vs Hardwood: Choosing the Right Fuel for You in Pembrokeshire

Why Kiln Dried Logs Are Better Than Seasoned — And Why It Matters to You

When it comes to heating your home with a wood burner or stove, not all firewood is created equal. At Mountain Farm, we’re passionate about supplying the best quality logs that burn cleaner, more efficiently, and with less hassle. One reason we can deliver consistently great results is that we sell kiln dried logs — and we’re proudly Woodsure accredited.

Kiln Dried vs Seasoned: What’s the Difference?

Seasoned Logs

Seasoned logs are air-dried — left outside to dry naturally over months or even years. While this does lower moisture content compared to freshly cut wood, it’s not always consistent. Weather conditions, storage methods and how the wood was split can all affect how dry the logs really are.

Kiln Dried Logs

Kiln drying takes firewood into a specialised heated chamber where moisture is driven out under controlled conditions. This ensures the logs consistently reach a very low moisture content —  under 20%. That matters, because the amount of moisture in your wood directly affects how well it burns.

The Benefits of Kiln Dried Logs

Here’s why kiln dried logs outperform seasoned wood:

🔥 Easier to Light

Because kiln dried logs start with such low moisture, they light much more easily. You don’t have to wrestle with damp wood that refuses to catch — and that makes lighting the fire quicker and more reliable.

🌡️ Burns Hotter & Cleaner

Less moisture means more of the wood’s energy goes into heat, not evaporating water. Kiln dried logs reach higher temperatures faster and maintain steady heat. This improves heating efficiency and helps your stove work the way it was designed to.

đź’¨ Less Smoke, Fewer Emissions

Wet or poorly dried wood creates visible smoke and a lot of particulates. Kiln dried wood produces far less smoke and harmful emissions than higher-moisture fuel — better for your chimney, your lungs and the environment.

🧽 Cleaner Stove & Chimney

Low moisture fuel throws off fewer tars and soot. That means less buildup in your stove and chimney, lowering the risk of creosote deposits — and reducing how often you need to clean and sweep.

Woodsure Accreditation — What It Means and Why It’s Important

At Mountain Farm, we’re proud to be Woodsure accredited — meaning we meet the UK’s only woodfuel quality assurance scheme. Woodsure works with suppliers to ensure that woodfuel (logs, pellets, briquettes and more) meets recognised quality standards, and that products are produced and supplied correctly.

The Woodsure scheme does a few key things:

âś… Checks that the supplier can consistently produce woodfuel to proper specifications
âś… Verifies quality from sourcing through to delivery
âś… Gives customers confidence they are buying tested, reliable fuel products
âś… Provides a recognised mark of quality for products like kiln dried logs

In other words, a Woodsure accreditation is a symbol you can trust — and here at Mountain Farm we’re committed to maintaining the highest standards, even though in Wales it is not yet a legal requirement to be Woodsure certified. We choose to meet these standards because it gives our customers peace of mind and ensures excellent performance every time you light a fire.

Softwood vs Hardwood: Choosing the Right Fuel for You

Not all firewood types burn the same. The two main categories wood burners encounter are softwood and hardwood — and the best choice depends on how you use your stove.

Softwood

  • Comes from coniferous trees like pine, spruce and fir

  • Lighter and easier to ignite

  • Burns hotter initially but quicker overall

  • Great for kindling and quick fires

Best For: Starting fires and short bursts of heat

Hardwood

  • Comes from deciduous trees like oak, ash, beech and maple

  • Denser and heavier than softwood

  • Burns longer and more steadily

  • Produces excellent coals for prolonged heat

Best For: Long, consistent heat — perfect for overnight burns and heating living spaces throughout the day

Tip: The ideal firewood setup usually mixes both — use softwood to get the fire going and hardwood to sustain that warm, long-lasting burn.

Our Promise to You

At Mountain Farm, everything we do — from how we source our wood, through how it’s dried and delivered — is aimed at giving you a better fire experience.
